Detainee reported the police arrested him on 6 November 2006 from Majeedhee Magu,
the main street of Male'. Detainee reported the police released him without
charge on 28 November 2006.
Detainee reported policemen in "star force" uniform approached him near the
national football grounds and ordered him to accompany them. Detainee reported
the police took him to the police headquarters in a taxi. Detainee reported the
police held him in an open area and accused him of stealing a mobile phone from
a shop. Detainee reported he explained to the police that he did not steal a
phone and showed them his Nokia mobile phone. Detainee reported the police
refused to listen to him and claimed he stole a Sony Ericcson mobile phone.
Detainee reported the police transported him to Atholhuvehi, a police base in
Male', on a police vehicle and held him an open area. Detainee reported twenty
policemen in "star force" uniform approached him at the open area and beat him
brutally with shod feet. Detainee reported he sustained a lot of injuries and
bleeding from his mouth and head. Detainee reported the police took him to
interrogation after approximately three hours and informed him that he was
released. Detainee reported he informed the police he wanted to complain about
the policemen who beat him. Detainee reported the police refused to look into
the matter and ordered him to leave the police base.
Detainee reported he witnessed a gathering near the administrative office of MDP,
the principal opposition party, on his way home. Detainee reported he walked
near the place and explained to the international observers and the people
gathered there about his arrest and beatings. Detainee reported he showed them
the bruises and bleeding on his body. Detainee reported three policemen in "star
force" uniform approached him while the observers were taking his pictures of
his injuries. Detainee reported the police handcuffed him and then literally
dragged him to a police vehicle.
Detainee reported the police took him to the jetty and transported him to
Dhoonidhoo Island Detention Center by speedboat. Detainee reported the police
held him in an open area for a few hours. Detainee reported the police took him
to an interrogating room and informed his reason of arrest as creating conflict
between the public and the police.
Detainee reported the police took him to the interrogation room again and
informed him that he was brought for his interrogation. Detainee reported his
body was aching and he was shivering due to being held out in the cold in the
open area. Detainee reported the police informed him that he would be
interrogated later and continued to hold him in the open area. Detainee reported
the police transferred him to a small solitary cell at around 22:00 on the same
day. Detainee reported the police provided him with a bed and edible food.
Detainee reported the interrogating authorities took him for queries on 7
November 2006 and claimed that he walked out onto the streets from the
administrative office of MDP. Detainee reported he explained to the
interrogating authorities that he had not gone into the office of the MDP, and
that he stopped at the area on his way home from Atholhuvehi. Detainee reported
he signed a statement on the same day.
Detainee reported the police allowed him to telephone his sister on 14 November
2006 for approximately three minutes. Detainee reported the police visited his
cell on 21 November 2006 and asked him as to whether he wanted to be transferred
under house arrest. Detainee reported the police took him to a speedboat and
transported him to Male' police headquarters. Detainee reported the police
informed him that he was transferred under house arrest. Detainee reported he
signed a statement to the effect.
Detainee reported the police took him to the Criminal Court on 28 November 2006
and a judge released him without charge. Detainee reported the police
transported him to Male' police headquarters and informed his released without
charge. Detainee reported that he signed a statement and was released shortly.
