Detainee reported the police arrested him near the Social Center
on 18 May 2006 and released him without charge on 25 May 2006.
Detainee reported he was sitting in the Social Centre open area watching
television when the police in "star force" uniform dispersed a gathering having
local delicacies at the area. Detainee reported a policeman in “star force”
uniform approached him and literally dragged him onto the street. Detainee
reported the police ordered him not to speak when he demanded the reason for his
arrest. Detainee reported the police handcuffed him behind his back and drove
him to the police base at Maafannu ward in Male’. Detainee reported the police
removed his handcuffs and held him in an open area. Detainee reported the police
verbally abused him.
Detainee reported the police transported him to Dhoonidhoo Island Detention
Center at around 02:30 on 19 May 2006 and held him in an open area. Detainee
reported the police held him in a large cell with sixty five other detainees on
19 May 2006. Detainee reported the detaining authorities provided him with a mat
as bedding and provided him with edible food. Detainee reported the toilet was
in fetid condition.
Detainee reported the interrogating authorities informed the reason for his
arrest on 23 May 2006 as participating in an unlawful gathering.
Detainee reported the police released him without charge on 25 May 2006 warning
him not engage in 'such acts' in the future. Detainee reported he signed a
statement to that effect. Detainee reported the police transported him to Male'
police headquarters and released him shortly.

Wife of detainee reported the police arrested the detainee on 18
May 2006 near Star Cinema on his way shopping. Wife of detainee reported the
police accordingly transported the detainee to Dhoonidhoo Island Detention
Center on the same day.
Wife of detainee reported the police released the detainee on 25 May 2006.
