Son of Mr Latheef reported that Mr Latheef was released at approximately 22:00 on 12 September 2005.

Son of Mr Latheef reported he wrote to the detaining authorities on 5 September 2005 requesting Mr Latheef’s release on bail on the grounds that bail was allowed in the Constitution. Son of Mr Latheef reported the detaining authorities initially replied saying that Mr Latheef's release on bail would be considered after all investigations have concluded.

5 September 2005

Son of Mr Latheef reported he had access to Mr Latheef on 3 September 2005. Son of Mr Latheef reported that the detaining authorities had extended Mr Latheef's period of detention by ten days. Son of Mr Latheef reported that Mr Latheef’s lawyer of was not informed of the extension of detention and was subsequently unable to lodge any challenge.

Son of Mr Latheef expressed concern that Mr Latheef had not been advised of his legal rights in detention, including his right to legal representation. Son of Mr Latheef reported that the detaining authorities did not inform the family of Mr Latheef that Mr Latheef had already appointed a lawyer so that the family of Mr Latheef and Mr Latheef subsequently appointed two separate lawyers for the same issue. Son of Mr Latheef expressed frustration and concern and such obstruction by the detaining authorities.

Son of Mr Latheef reported that he had written to the detaining authorities requesting that the family of Mr Latheef be granted weekly access to Mr Latheef. Son of Mr Latheef expressed frustration that the detaining authorities would only advise him that access was granted on that same day. Mr Latheef reported that it was enormously disruptive to not be given any prior notice whatsoever as to when access would be granted.

26 August 2005

Son of Mr Latheef reported that a lawyer has been retained to represent Mr Latheef. Son of Mr. Latheef reported that the Maldives Police Services advised him that they would reply to correspondence sent by the Mr Latheef’s lawyer on 23 August 2005.

Son of Mr. Latheef reported he was granted access to Mr. Latheef on 20 August 2005. Son of Mr. Latheef reported that Mr. Latheef appeared to be in good health but had complained about the poor ventilation in the cells and the fact he was not allowed outside the cell throughout the day.

Son of Mr. Latheef reported he complained to the detaining authorities about the poor ventilation and Mr. Latheef not being given time outside the cell. Son of Mr. Latheef reported that the police replied that Mr. Latheef had not requested to be taken out. Son of Mr. Latheef expressed the view that a special request was not requested because all other detainees in Dhoonidhoo detention facility were have been granted 30 minutes out of the cell each day.

Son of Mr. Latheef also noted that boat transfers to the detention facilities to islands far from Male’ has to be arranged by the families of detainees. Son of Mr. Latheef expressed concern that many families may not be able to bear such costs.

Son of Mr. Latheef reported a lawyer was retained for Mr. Latheef. Son of Mr. Latheef reported the Maldives Police Services advised that a reply to the letter sent by the lawyer retained for Mr. Latheef would be provided today 23 August 2005.

Son of Mr. Latheef reported that he was granted access to Mr. Latheef on 20 August 2005. Son of Mr. Latheef reported Mr. Latheef appeared to be in good health but had complained of the poor ventilation in the cells. Son of Mr. Latheef reported that Mr. Latheef was not allowed outside the cell throughout the day.

Son of Mr Latheef reported that it was now procedure to allow all detainees thirty minutes outside the cell each day.

Son of Mr. Latheef noted that boat transfers to the detention facilities on islands away from Male’ had to be arranged by the families of detainees many of which could not support such costs.

Son of Mr Latheef reported he was granted thirty-minutes access to Mr Latheef at 14:00 on 20 August 2005. Son of Mr Latheef reported Mr Latheef complained that he is not allowed out of his cell and had only been granted one meeting. Son of Mr Latheef reported that Mr Latheef said he has not signed a statement and had not been granted access to a lawyer.

Son of Mr Latheef reported he wrote to the police on 19 August 2005 advising them of the details of the lawyer appointed to represent Mr Latheef. Son of Mr Latheef reported that staff from the National Human Rights Commission met with Mr Latheef on 19 August 2005.

20 August 2005

Son of Mr Rasheed reported that the police apprehended Mr Rasheed on 13 August 2005.
Son of Mr Rasheed wrote to the police on 19 August 2005 giving details of the lawyer retained by the family of Mr Rasheed. Son of Mr Rasheed requested in the letter to send writing and reading material to Mr Rasheed and to request bail for Mr Rasheed.

Son of Mr Rasheed reported he received a written response on 18 August 2005 to his letter written to the police on 14 August 2005 requesting access to Mr Rasheed and permission for Mr Rasheed to travel on his annual Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca. Son of Mr Rasheed reported that the response stated that access to Mr Rasheed will be arranged at an unspecified future date, advised that the grounds of detention could not be provided and requested information on the scheduled date of Mr Rasheed’s pilgrimage.
