Detainee reported he was arrested around 1.30 am from a Cafe on 6 July 2005, and that he was handcuffed to the back upon arrest. Detainee reported about 10 policemen forced themselves into the cafe and searched the entire premises and confiscated some banners lying there. Detainee reported he was not shown a warrant for arrest nor given a reason for arrest. 

Detainee reported he was taken to the police headquarters in Male' and kept sitting there without any questioning by the police until about 7.30am in the morning. Detainee reported he was deprived of sleep.

Detainee reported police questioned him on whether he was involved in printing of banners to which detainee reported he was not involved. Detainee was also asked why he was in Cafe at that time of the night and detainee stated that as he was not a child he saw not wrong in being out at 1am.

On being questioned about the banners, detainee presorted that he knew the banners were printed by his friend Ahmed Hussein Mohammed (detainee #176) and that his friend had every intention of handing the material to the Ministry of Home Affairs for permission to display.

Detainee reported the reason for his arrest has still not been given to him, and that he felt he was only released because of a large gathering of people outside the police station demanding his release.

Detainee reported he was released from the police station from the backdoor, and that upon release was told he could not leave Male' without permission.

Detainee reported he urgently needed to visit his own island, and that he has telephoned the police 3 to 4 times times today 7 July to inform them he wanted to leave Male'. However, detainee reported he has still not been given permission.
