Detainee reported he was arrested around 1.30am on 6 July 2005 from a a friend's cafe. Detainee was handcuffed to the back while being taken to the Male' Police Headquarters. Detainee reported he was kept sitting in a chair at the police station throughout the night and that he was taken notice by police at 9.30 am in the morning, when he was taken to have his photograph taken. Investigations started only around 12.30 pm on 6 July some 11 hours after he had been kept sitting. Detainee reported that questions were asked pertaining to whether he was involved in the printing of the banners confiscated from the Cafe and why he was there at the particular cafe.
Detainee stated that he was not involved in the printing the banners and did not even know what the banners said. When questioned what detainee was doing in the Cafe detainee stated that the cafe belonged to a childhood friend pf detainee and that he robustly visited the cafe.
Detainee stated he signed his statement which the police took from him and was told he was released to Male' arrest, and that he cannot travel outside Male without permission.
Detainee reported as he needed to visit his island on 8 July he has written a letter to Police requesting permission. However, detainee reported police have replied that the authorities have not yet given detainee permission to leave.
Detainee states he was released from the backdoor of the police station and that when detainee requested to go home on his own vehicle, Police replied that authorities ask that detainee be transported only in the Police vehicle.
Detainee reported he felt he was only released because there was a large gathering of people outside the police station demanding release of detainee as well as others who were arrested with detainee.
Detainee reported that brother of detainee had called Police on 6 July to enquire why detainee was being held, to which the Police had replied that detainee was being on held on charges of being involved in an affray.
