In the case of the escape of Ibrahim Moosa Luthfy of Fenmuli of Hitadoo Island of Seenu Atoll while convicted of attempting to commit an Act against the State in publishing the internet Magazine Sandhaanu, having established the negligence of Warrant Officer Ibrahim Shukuree of Gulhazaaru-ge of Hulhudoo Island of Seenu Atoll, the Criminal Court today sentenced him to four years banishment.

According to the verdict passed by the Criminal Court, Luthfy – who had been convicted for 25 years imprisonment – escaped while he was sent to Colombo to undergo eye treatment on the doctor’s recommendation because of Shukuree’s negligence.

According to the Court’s verdict the Department of Corrections sent Luthfy for treatment [abroad] having assigned him to NSS Warrant Officer Grade 1 Shukuree and Corporal Assad Waheed, these two people. Luthfy escaped on the night of 23 May 2003.

“Given that Ibrahim Shukuree says that Ibrahim Moosa Luthfy escaped between 4.30 and 5.00  early morning when Ibrahim Shukuree went to the toilet having been on duty supervising him; and given that Ibrahim Shukree went to the toilet without assigning his duty on Corporal Assad Waheed the second person sent to supervise Ibrahim Moosa Luthfy …” the Court verdict said.
