The European Union Parliamentary Delegation visiting the Maldives this week has observed the importance of improving upon some of the most basic rights in the Maldives from what they are at present.

At a press conference held at the Office of the People’s Majlis yesterday, responding to a question posed by Haveeru, the Chairperson of the delegation, Nina Gill stated that one of the most important aspects as Maldives works towards establishing a total democracy is the comprehensive establishment of basic rights. Noting that some of the basic rights are not comprehensive enough in the Maldives, Nina said one of these included the lack of complete freedom of expression. She also noted that even in the field of media there should be allowed more freedom than at present.

“In a total democracy it is important for the existence of the right to complete freedom of expression,” Nina said. She also said that the EU is concerned regarding the people detained in connection with the Sandhaanu issue.

The EU delegation met with the offenders who are serving their sentences at Maafushi Jail in connection with the Sandhaanu issue.

The EU delegation stated that the steps being taken to improve conditions at Maafushi Jail were satisfactory. But that the jail needs to be developed further.

During the press conference Nina stated that there was opportunity for the further development of the Maldivian economy, however, the comprehensive existence of human rights and total democracy would be a further strength.
