Man Who Disappeared Onboard from Addu to Male’ Found Dead
26 March 2005
Mohamed Saeed Moosa Wajdee, Feydoo, Seenu Atoll

On the night of 27 February 2005 the man who jumped overboard a boat travelling from Addu to Male’ has been found dead washed up on Kandihera Island, Seenu Atoll.

The body of Mohamed Shafeeu, 26, Nooraanee Vaadee, Meedoo Island of Senu Atoll, who jumped overboard “Hiyvvaru” boat, was found on Kandihera beach by people who had gone on a picnic to that island yesterday. However, since the body had been in the ocean for around a month it was in such a state of decomposition that it was unrecognizable.

Following the identification of the body beyond any doubt by Shafeeu’s mother, it was transported to Meedoo at around sunset yesterday and buried in the island cemetery last night.

A reliable source with reference to Shafeeu’s mother informs that she had identified Shafeeu’s body with such certainty by marks on his genitals and forehead, by his nails and teeth.

According to some passengers who had travelled by the same boat when he jumped overboard, he wore a red chequered shirt and a pair of blue jeans. When his body was found he had only the jeans on him.

The Maldives Police Services, Seenu Atoll Office, Meedoo Island Office and Meedoo islanders assisted in transferring Shafeeu’s body to Meedhoo.

It is believed that about a month ago, Shafeeu who was being transported to Male’, had jumped into the sea in order to escape the Police.

He had been in police custody a number of times in relation to drug related troubles and other problems.

In connection with Shafeeu’s disappearance on the night of 27 February, surveillance work by air and sea had taken place to find him.

Shafeeu was a young, single man.
