HUMAN RIGHTS PRESS RELEASE 12 DECEMBER
2004
Quick Translation
In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Human Rights Commission of the Maldives
Male’
Maldives
PRESS STATEMENT
In his resignation letter from this Commission sent to the President’s Office
the former member of the Commission Mr. Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa stated that the
Commission was established with the objective to serve the nation by promoting
human rights within the framework of the Constitution, the Islamic Shariah and
the international conventions on human rights to which the Maldives is a party
to, but in his view he was compelled to resign because the Commission was not
conducting its work in a manner that would serve its objective.
In view of the fact that this statement had been publicized by the public media
and because the Commission considers that it called into question the
Commission’s mandate as well as the dignity and credibility of its members, and
given that the Commission cannot pursue its tasks save with public confidence
and dignity, the Commission publicly announces that it has requested the
President of the Republic to investigate the accusations made against the
Commission by Mr Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa as soon as possible.
