Human Rights Commission says Statements are Not Leaked by the Commission
19 April 2005
Hussein Fiyaz Moosa
Human Rights Commission today reported that statements or information on
statements taken in connection with complaints submitted or case investigated by
the Commission, were not being leaked these days within the Commission.
Secretary General of the Commission Rasheeda Ali said that statements and
information taken by the Commission were documented as confidential material but
if the statement provider requested for a copy, it is provided to the
individual.
“These days statements or information on the statements have been published in
websites. And the public are talking about this. People think these documents
are leaked from the Commission. That is not so,” Rasheeda said.
When the statement provider is given a copy of his statement, he cannot be
compelled not to give the statement to someone else Rasheeda said. However when
such statements or information on such statements are publicised the rights of
certain individuals are being lost and it may obstruct investigations carried
out by the Commission she said.
