The Human Rights Commission has sought information regarding the sudden death of Muaaviath Mahmood on Wednesday while he was detained in Dhoonidhoo for investigations, from an inmate detained in the same cell with the deceased.

However up until Thursday’s issue went to print, we have been unable to get information in connection with the matter from the Commission.

According to a press statement issued by the Office of the Police on Wednesday regarding Muaaviath of Raiyvina of Maafannu District of Male’ who was detained in Dhoondihoo in connection with a drugs related issue, the Human Rights Commission met the inmate in the same cell with the deceased Hussein Habeeb of Irudeymaa-ge of Maduvvari Island of Raa Atoll and sought information from him. However the statement did not reveal further information regarding the matter.

The Office of the Police reported that when Dhoondihoo Detention Centre received news on Wednesday morning that Muaaviath was having sudden breathing difficulties and complications he was immediately brought to Male’ in a speed boat with medical attention.

According to the doctors in IGMH [Indira Ghandhi Memorial Hospital] Muaaviath was dead by the time he was brought to the hospital the Police reported.

The Police statement reported that according to the doctors, Muaaviath – who had been previously detained in prison for theft, assault and drug offences – had not been inflicted any harm and approximate that the cause of his sudden death was related to complications that arose due to drug abuse. “The blood test results will be out within the next three days. When the results are out the matter would be certain,” the Police statement said.
